Established in early 1998, ILSI South Andean represents Bolivia, Chile, and Peru.
Priority topics include HACCP, the role of physical activity in The prevention of obesity, and the fortification of food with micronutrients. Other issues of interest to the branch are antioxidants, carbohydrates, sweeteners, and other additives.
In mid-1998 a project was launched that involved the translation into Spanish of the ILSI Europe monograph "Healthy Lifestyles: Nutrition, and Physical Activity". The aim was to spread knowledge concerning this topic to all Spanish-speaking countries for whom this subject is of great relevance.
The translation has been published, and is available though ILSI Press. The project was so successful that in a very short span two new monographs have been translated into Spanish, namely: "Biotechnology: An Introduction", and "Nutritional and Health Aspects of Sugars: Evaluation of New Findings". The first of these is ready for press and will be available shortly. The second one was published in January 2000. ILSI South Andean is committed to making credible scientific information available in Spanish to scientists, health professionals, and policy makers throughout Latin America.
